Stay Healthy, and Wealthy

Saving money

It’s cold and flu season and the most important thing that I can do to ward off the cold and/or flu, and all the costs of being sick, is to keep myself healthy. Easier said than done, right? With the colder weather, holiday planning, holiday parties, and loose ends to tie up before the year ends, it is easy to run ourselves ragged, jeopardizing our immune systems, and making ourselves more susceptible to illness. So, what can we do to prevent this? Here are a few tips and tricks that I use to keep myself healthy:

1. First, make it a priority to exercise. Even if you don’t have time for your normal workout, taking the dog for a longer walk, fitting in a quick run or brisk walk before or after work, or taking the kids to the park and running around with them can help. Just get moving!!

2. Second, don’t let all the holiday parties and your busy schedule derail your efforts to eat healthily. I usually try to eat something healthy prior to going to a party so that I have very little room to fill up on desserts, fried food, and any other unhealthy options that may be served at the party. Also, when I know that the week ahead will be busy, I try to plan the weekend before by buying ready-to-make, healthy meals and also cooking things that can be eaten as left overs for a day or two after. And, if I know that I am going to be out for a good portion of the day running around and doing errands, I throw some trail mix and a bottle of water in my purse so that I am not tempted to buy something unhealthy when I get hungry.

3. Sanitize everything. I not only wash my hands more frequently during cold and flu season but I also take to wiping down my phone, keyboard, desk, car wheel, and anything else that I touch frequently to minimize the germs being spread.

4. Befriend green tea and warm salt water. They always do the trick when I start to feel and tickle in my throat. Drink green tea while it is really hot as this will soothe your throat. Early in the morning or before you go to bed, gargle warm salt water and do not drink anything for at least an hour after to allow the salt to heal your throat.

5. Get rest whenever you can. Instead of watching that last TV show, finishing that movie, reading that magazine, or surfing the internet, get in bed. Your body, and your pocketbook, will thank you for it.

6. Water, Water, Water!! Water in the morning, water in the evening, water throughout the day. Drink it warm with lemon, cold with lemon, or just plain. Just make sure that you drink it often as this is one of the best remedies that I have found when I feel a little bit run down or sluggish.

What does this have to do with money? Being sick has so many costs attached to it, including the cost of medication, doctors visits, having to call in sick from work, and lost productivity. It is also just an annoyance. Save yourself the trouble, and the money, by making every effort to keep yourself healthy and your immune system strong.
